Intensive Reading

Intensive Reading is an elective course mandated by the District of Miami-Dade
County Public School for all Level 1 or 2 students on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). The purpose of this course is to supplement the Language Arts curriculum and develop reading skills. Emphasis is placed on developing mastery of necessary skills to enhance performance on the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test). The content is intended to develop and strengthen reading through the integration of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and critical thinking.

Course Objectives:

The Intensive Reading course covers all major categories of the FCAT in order to enable learners to achieve the high standards required by the state of Florida. The use of hands-on activities, real-world connections, and computer software to engage the learner are used to attain this goal.

Course Objectives:

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Use appropriate before, during, and after reading strategies to enhance comprehension.
2. Demonstrate comprehension at literal, inferential, and evaluative levels.
3. Demonstrate understanding and use of appropriate and effective vocabulary, including specific content area vocabulary.
4. Demonstrate listening comprehension skills at literal, inferential, and evaluative levels.
5. Demonstrate active and critical reading and writing of literary, informational and technical text.
6. Respond to reading through thinking, talking, and writing.
7. Increase use of study skills to enhance achievement.
8. Demonstrate the ability to select and use materials for a variety of reading purposes, including reading for independent, recreational purposes.
9. Demonstrate the ability to adjust strategies and rate depending on purpose and type of reading materials.
